Many customers have asked whether the backing plate on our orbital polishers can be replaced with a different size. We would like to clarify that our orbital polishers are not designed to support the installation of backing plates in different sizes.
The reason is that the backing plate, counterweight, foam pad, and other rotating components form a precisely engineered eccentric system. The weight and dimensions of the backing plate are carefully calculated to maintain the proper balance between the counterweight and the polishing pad during operation.
If a backing plate that is smaller or larger than the original specification is installed, the weight distribution and rotational balance of the eccentric system may be affected. This can result in increased vibration, reduced operating smoothness, excessive load on the bearings, and potentially premature wear of internal components.
Can I Change the Counterweight Together with the Backing Plate?
We also do not recommend changing the counterweight together with the backing plate.
Our orbital polishers are designed and precisely balanced as a complete system. Different specifications may require different counterweights, bearing seats, and other fixed components. These components are manufactured and matched according to the specific design of each machine.
Therefore, individual components should not be replaced with different sizes or specifications. Simply changing the backing plate or counterweight without modifying the entire system may make it difficult to maintain the original balance and smooth operation of the polisher.
Our Recommendation
For the best performance, stability, and service life, we strongly recommend using the original backing plate and foam pads supplied with the machine.
If you prefer to use polishing pads from other brands, this is generally acceptable as long as the pads are compatible with the machine and have a similar weight to the original foam pads supplied with the polisher.
Using properly matched components helps maintain the designed balance of the eccentric system, minimize unnecessary vibration, and ensure smooth and reliable operation.
Please do not change the backing plate, counterweight, or other fixed components to different specifications individually. The machine is precisely engineered as a complete system, and its components should be used according to the original specifications.
